A middle-aged cyclist was on Friday crushed to death by a
tipper along SCC road, New market, Bwari in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). An
eyewitness, Nuhu Aliyu, said the accident occurred around 4:30pm. He said the
cyclist was crushed to death on the spot, while the person he was carrying was
taken to the hospital.
The tipper was immediately set ablaze by some angry
youths in the area. The youths demanded that speed breakers be immediately put
on strategic places along the road. A similar accident occurred recently along
the same road by Jigo bus stop, where a farmer was crushed to death while crossing
the road. Youths in the community also protested and requested for the
construction of speed breakers close to every bus stop along the road.
It took the efforts of the council’s chairman, Peter
Yohanna Ushafa, to calm the angry youths. Reacting to Friday’s incident, the
Bwari Divisional Police Officer, Superintendent Coker Shado, confirmed the
killing of the cyclist but said the tipper has already been set ablaze before
his men arrived the scene. He appealed to the residents to always observe
carefully before crossing the ever busy road.
The police officer said investigation is ongoing to
unravel the cause of the accident.
